Supporting LGBTQ+ children, young people and their families

The Barnardo’s Positive Identities Service provides support to children, young people, families and professionals around sexuality and gender identity. We work with young people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and other related identities (LGBT+), those who may be questioning their gender identity and/or sexuality, and their families. We also work with professionals supporting them, empowering them to support young people with their identity.

We run a variety of different areas of support, our main one being ‘Gender Space’, which supports children and young People who identify as trans or are gender questioning. We also support their families too. Please see our Support section for further info on this.

We offer training to professionals, supporting schools, children and young people’s services practitioners and community groups to ensure their organisation is inclusive and accessible to LGBT+ young people, their teams are proactively challenging discrimination and prejudice, and are confident in supporting young people & families around gender identity and sexuality. More information about the training and support we offer to professionals and community groups can be found in our Training section.
